The hilarious duo, Gerald and Piggie, are in a play at Dallas Children's Theater. Piggie seems excited about the possibilities, but Gerald isn't so sure...can their friendship survive as they navigate the ups-and-downs of life on stage?

Just like in the books, Gerald and Piggie experience a lot of different everyday adventures on stage. Whether it's going to a party together, a misunderstanding over a beloved toy, or sharing a yummy ice cream, their relationship feels relatable (something I love about the stories).

Speaking of ice cream, did you know there are some fun ways to make the tasty, cold treat that don't involve a machine? Before coming to see DCT's production of Mo Willems' ELEPHANT & PIGGIE'S "WE ARE IN A PLAY!," try out the following activity and share an ice cream with your loved ones. Then, come to the theater and see all your favorite Mo Willems' Elephant & Piggie characters sharing in the fun on stage!

Ice Cream In A Bag

Ingredients needed:

  • 1 cup half-and-half
  • 2 tbsp. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 3 cups ice (don't skimp on the ice - using too little will make this process take longer)
  • 1/3 cup kosher salt
  • Plastic bags (small and large)
  • Optional: favorite ice cream toppings

Directions:

  • Combine the half-and-half, sugar, and vanilla in a small plastic bag. Release extra air as you seal the bag.
  • Combine ice and salt in a large plastic bag. Put the other bag inside this bag. Seal the bigger bag.
  • Shake the bag for about 10 minutes (pay attention to the consistency in the smaller bag - you may have to shake longer or shorter than 10 minutes).
  • Enjoy the ice cream with your loved ones (top with your favorite toppings, if desired).

DCT Staff Thoughts

Just like Gerald and Piggie, my relationships (especially in my immediate family) experience highs and lows, too. And sometimes, I need to reconnect by sharing in something with the people I love. Whether it's spending an evening going together to the theater or just a few minutes in an afternoon experiencing a new way to make a treat, these intentional moments can be the "highs" to help us get through the "lows."

These activities are for you to enjoy while you are at home, and hopefully bring a little DCT fun into your quality time together. We have found that the more prepared our audiences can be before they get to the theater, the more engaged they will be as an audience. After you make ice cream in a bag at home, don't forget to see Mo Willems' ELEPHANT & PIGGIE'S "WE ARE IN A PLAY!" at Dallas Children's Theater.
