Dr. Maya Angelou's inspiring poem comes to life on stage at Dallas Children's Theater this spring. In LIFE DOESN'T FRIGHTEN ME: I AM FEARLESS ROYALTY, four heroes overcome their fears with the power of courage and remind the rest of us that we can, too! We are all fearless royalty with crowns upon our heads.

When you wear your crown,
it's known all around...
That you are ENOUGH.

Before coming to see DCT's production of LIFE DOESN'T FRIGHTEN ME: I AM FEARLESS ROYALTY, use some recycled toilet paper rolls to make crowns at home with your loved ones. Then, celebrate the royalty inside each of you as you wear your crowns!

Recycled Toilet Paper Roll Crown

Materials needed:

  • An empty toilet paper roll for each crown
  • Paint (you could use gold or silver for a traditional look, or go wild with colors) and brushes
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Glitter, gems, stickers, feathers, washi tape, or anything else you have on hand to decorate the crown
  • Ribbon or string

Instructions:

  • On one end of the toilet paper roll, cut out a zig zag pattern (like points on a crown).
  • Paint the toilet paper roll. Let it dry fully.
  • Glue the embellishments of your choosing on to the crown.
  • Once dry, punch a hole on either side of the crown base. Tie the ribbon or string on to the crown so it can be tied securely to your head.
  • Have fun wearing your crown around, showing off your royalty!

DCT Staff Thoughts

Courage, bravery, conquering fears - these are all things I want to encourage in my kids. But, during the hustle of life, it's not always something I remember to include in our everyday conversations. I appreciate the chances I get to focus on celebrating these qualities inside all of us, whether it's making a crown we can wear in honor of our "royalty" (the kind that the show speaks of) or seeing a play together that explores fear and courage so beautifully.

These activities are for you to enjoy while you are at home and hopefully bring a little DCT fun into your quality time together. We have found that the more prepared our audiences can be before they get to the theater, the more engaged they will be as an audience. After you make a crown at home, come watch LIFE DOESN'T FRIGHTEN ME: I AM FEARLESS ROYALTY at Dallas Children's Theater.
