The real star of Treasure Island is of course, the treasure. There is something so enticing to kids (and adults too!) about digging up something precious and fascinating, which is why this story is still popular today. While most of us can't hop on a ship and seek adventure on the high seas, we can make our own treasure chest to dig up in the future. A time capsule is the perfect craft to ensure your kiddos have a good time, while preserving a snapshot of life right now to "dig up" in the future!

What you will need:

  • A sturdy box for each of your kids (like a shoebox-sized storage box)
  • Paper and envelopes
  • Tape
  • Ribbon or string
  • Pen/pencil
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Stickers
  • A letter from you to each of your kids (see step #1 below)
  • Memorabilia that represents your child's life today (see step #5 below)

Follow the instructions on http://www.mykidsadventures.com/time-capsule/ to make your very own time capsule. Feel free to get creative and make it your own! After all, the real treasure will be the fun you have with your kids when you re-discover the box in a few years.

DCT Staff Thoughts

One of my favorite parts about working at DCT is the sheer magic the kids experience at our shows. Whether it is watching the production, working on crafts before the show, or meeting the actors in the lobby, the wonder and excitement on each child's face makes every long rehearsal 100% worth it. I am so excited for TREASURE ISLAND Reimagined! because I know so many kids who just LOVE pirates! My nephew is among those who think that adventure and swashbuckling is captivating. When planning the 35th anniversary season, we thought big, and boy does TREASURE ISLAND Reimagined! deliver. Circus stunts, life-size puppets, and maybe even the chance for your child to join in on the action.

For TREASURE ISLAND Reimagined! character, Jim Hawkins, the adventure helps him to grow up a little bit. Of course, we know you're in no hurry for your little ones to grow up and seek adventure, so we hope that this activity can preserve a little piece of life right now, and bring a little DCT fun to your time together.
