I know we’re all keeping our fingers crossed for a snow day this year. The magic, the whimsy, and of course the surprise day off of school are all so enticing. While we can’t change the weather report, we can ensure a snow day this year.

Okay, so it may not be REAL snow that falls from the sky, but it’s as close as we can get right now (and this stuff sticks around when the temperatures go back up). And better yet, we are combining snow and art with your very own snow paint.

What you will need:

  • Shaving cream
  • White school glue (40 oz. bottle)
  • Optional- silver or white glitter

Mix the shaving cream into the glue slowly until the mixture is light and fluffy. Add glitter if desired. Now… paint! If you would like to cut out accessories for snow people and snow scenes, be sure to have colored construction paper nearby. With this kind of snow, the only limitation is your imagination!

DCT Staff Thoughts

Living in Texas means we have far fewer snowy days than many other places get. I actually grew up in Florida where the only snow (or cold weather for that case) I ever got was on television. I vividly remember the first time I ever encountered snow. I was ten years old (far older than Peter is in The Snowy Day book) and I remember absolutely every detail. I was in Colorado for the weekend, and they had one unusually cold day in May where I woke up to snow on the ground. I was filled with so much wonder and awe, in the way only a child can when experiencing something for the first time. I played in the snow all day until it melted and my hands were pruned and frozen. It was one of the best and most picturesque days I can remember from that period of my childhood.

Have your children been lucky enough to experience the magic of snowfall? Do you remember the joy on their faces? Their first snowball fight? Or what about you? Do you remember the first time you caught snow on your tongue? The first time you sled down a hill?

We’re keeping our fingers crossed for a real snowy day in Texas this year, but either way we’ll have plenty of snow to go around at Dallas Children’s Theater.
