Webster’s definition of kindness looks something like this: an act of good will; benevolence; that temper or disposition which delights in contributing to the happiness of others; charity; hospitality. Other words used to describe kindness include empathy, sensitivity, affection, humanitarianism, and sensibility. Author Henry James is quoted as saying: “Three things in human life are important: the first is to be kind; the second is to be kind; and the third is to be kind.”

In DCT’s 2019-2020 season of amazing plays, we are coloring the world with kindness. Whether it is showing a Beast a little compassion, or giving companionship to a lonely Old Man....Whether it’s a Nana taking the time to show her grandson that our differences are what make us special, or a shy teacher getting just the encouragement from his students...the theme of kindness is guaranteed to be a big part of the conversation before the show, on the way home, and hopefully in the acts and deeds of our young people for years beyond.

Join us this season in coloring the world with kindness...

Disney’s BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

Music by Alan Menken
Lyrics by Howard Ashman & Tim Rice
Book by Linda Woolverton
Directed by Nancy Schaeffer

September 22 – October 27, 2019
Be our guest for this tale as old as time! Spirited Belle longs for adventure beyond her small, country town. But does she get more than she bargained for when the Beast captures her father and she is forced to trade places to save him? Favorite castle figures Lumiere, Cogsworth, Chip, and Mrs. Potts hold out hope that Belle can, at last, be the one to help the misunderstood Beast learn to love and be loved in return. If so, they can all be rescued from the curse they are under. Can she do it before the last rose petal falls? Beloved songs mixed with a touch of compassion and kindness highlight the power of true love in this large-scale, family musical based on the Disney classic.

Directed by vicki washington

March 21 – April 5, 2020
On a Sunday after church in a bustling, ethnically and culturally diverse American city, CJ and his Nana board the public bus for their weekly trip across town to help out at a soup kitchen. Along the way, CJ notices the many differences among people and asks tons of curious questions: Why don’t we have a car? How come that man can’t see? How come it’s always so dirty over there? How?...Why?...With Nana’s fearless and compassionate guidance, CJ discovers that everyone and everything has a unique rhythm and purpose; that the world’s got answers if we listen with more than our ears and see with more than our eyes. This inspiring and imaginative play is based on The New York Times bestseller that won a Newbery Medal, Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor, and a Caldecott Honor.
